Where’s Jack Bauer When We Need Him?
Thanks to Fox News’ “Hannity and Colmes,” we now know the real danger to American society. And, it’s not Al Qaeda. It’s something much, much more dangerous, capable of “destroying an entire generation in America.” Al Qaeda could bring in a nuke and “kill 100,000 people,” but the teachers are capable of much, much more. Like, inflicting the word “scrotum” on our children. Or worse, foisting that pinko Judy Blume onto all of our fourth graders.
Check this transcript from a recent episode:
SEAN HANNITY: Alright, let me ask you. Because, you — when you said about the Department of Education — you want to abolish it — when you said that the teachers unions is more dangerous to this country in the long term –NEAL BOORTZ: In the long term, yeah.
HANNITY: Than al Qaeda.
BOORTZ: Right. Look, Al Qaeda, they could bring in a nuke into this country and kill 100,000 people with a well-placed nuke somewhere. Ok. We would recover from that. It would be a terrible tragedy, but the teachers unions in this country can destroy a generation.
HANNITY: They are.
BOORTZ: Well, they are destroying a generation.
HANNITY: They are ruining our school system.
BOORTZ: They’re much more dangerous. We worry about al Qaeda and we should. But at the same time let’s not let the teachers union skate.
HANNITY: They destroyed our school system, and we don’t do anything. The parents — why there aren’t people rising up against it is unbelievable.
As a soon-to-be parent myself, I couldn’t agree more. In fact, my wife and I have already started stockpiling the munitions. We’ve got a few missile launchers in our basement. And the day that the fucking government forces our child to attend kindergarten is the day we throw caution to the wind, put on our camouflage, smear some black anti-glare makeup below our eyes, and destroy the elementary school down the street. Blow that son of a bitch sky high. Ain’t no goddamn terrorist gonna’ teach reading, writing and arithmetic to my little ones. Fucking teachers.

I know that blaming my teachers brings a lot of relief. Like blaming anybody else often does. The neo-cons here in Canada tried to dismantle the educational system, and examinations of their schooling histories consistently revealed they never respected or felt they got emough approval from, their teachers. Not to mention they didn't pay attention. So this whole anti-teacher fatwa looks and smells like a bad case of transferrence and badly-aimed vengeance.
What asshats grow up to be is bigger asshats, apparently.
I'd be onside with blaming Hannity and Colmes for lowering the tone and quality of so-called American journalism. But all they've done was jump onto a handcart that was headed in the same direstion as the proverbial handbasket. They have a lot of company doing the same con job.
Teachers should only be part of the educational system - parents taking an active role, and having a respectful dialogue with teachers would be a great addition. If I ever took H & C at their face value (which is FUGLY!), I might ask them what realistic alternative they'd propose.
Boot-camp style bible schools? Re-education & Labour Centres (that really put the thumbscrews to the intelligensia in Cambodia, Hm?), or even straight into military service?
Those guys aren't too smart, but they're crazy like FOX.

I couldn’t agree more, the last thing we want is middle class teachers with health insurance and livable wages. A probationary period? Why would you want to help new teacher become better in a profession that is all about experience. The world needs ditch diggers too.

Okay, teachers and teachers unions aren't terrorists. But they sure as hell don't teach much, either. Maybe they can get the wages and the minivans as a reward for teaching kids how to read and add in KINDERGARTEN, not TENTH GRADE.

Holy Shit! You're gonna have a kid? As a parent of 3 daughters aged 19, 22 and 25, I can tell you there is nothing more fun than creating a life for them that drives them to therapy. Good luck!

Until those guys have spent time in a classroom at any level, I don't want to hear it. Teachers work damn hard and not always with the support from parents they should have.

Nothing irks me more than hearing crap against teachers for "not teaching" and failing kids. My mom is and has been a teacher for 20 years, and she works damn hard to do what she can to make learning enjoyable and worthwhile. And she has to do it within a system that constantly reduces funds, ties hands, and requires paradoxical requests to be fufilled.
Not every teacher is great, and every part of the system has problems, including unions. But until you've experienced teaching a class full of kids, saw the results, heard the exasperations, and saw the personal finances teachers expend, don't believe you know whats up.
