Wednesday Morning Reality Check

hillaryohio.jpg Well, the Obamamomentum has dried up. Hillary woke up this morning, vibrant, fresh-faced, and shrill, after winning Ohio, Rhode Island, and Texas last night. She’s already trying to make the election about the superdelegates, trying to force Florida and Michigan’s delegates to count, and it looks like Senator Clinton is going to run on the Democrat’s soft-version of a campaign of fear for the next month and a half.

That’s right, folks — at the very earliest, this thing runs until the April 22nd Pennsylvania primaries, meaning that Eagles and Steelers fans may decide the future of our country. We are so fucked. And I’ve got major campaign fatigue.

Meanwhile, asked whether she and Obama should be on the same ticket, Clinton said:

“That may be where this is headed, but of course we have to decide who is on the top of ticket. I think the people of Ohio very clearly said that it should be me.”

A month ago, I probably would’ve been happy with either one of them on the top of the ticket, but that goddamn woman has gotten on my last nerve. The idea of four to eight years of that shrieking laugh has made my heart convulse. I don’t think I could stomach it. Can someone please explain to me what the hell happened? My mother, who like most Americans, only gets bits and pieces of the news, said she didn’t want to vote for Obama because he was Muslim, because of his racist church, and because he didn’t put his hand on his heart for the pledge of allegiance and wouldn’t wear an American Flag pin. Are these honestly the factors that have stopped to Obama train? Do people actually believe these things and care about them?

don't feel bad, my Mom still has a George Bush bumper sticker on her closet door. Things aren't going to get any better till this WWII "greatest generation" voting block goes off into the sunset.

I voted for Obama and lots of other people in Columbus did, too. Cincy is conservative and Cleveland is pro-union, and Columbus kind of gets in the middle. My boss, who is black, said he thinks that this is the rest of the nation saying they're just not ready for a black president. BOOOOOOOO, racist people! Hooray beer!

I'm stunned by it but a lot of people believe he is a Muslim who wouldn't take his pledge with his hand on the Bible, but on the Koran instead. I know people who I considered to be at least a little bit informed who believed that until earlier this week. (And they went to look into it which is how they found out he wasn't a Muslim). I fear that Obama has greatly overestimated the intelligence in the average American.

I support Obama, but your mother's reasoning is only slightly more ridiculous than your own. You don't want to vote for her because she's "shrill" and her laugh is "shrieking?" Come on now. I know you aren't a sexist simpleton, so come up with some better reasons for voting Obama instead. Policy, perhaps?

I was pretty disappointed, too. I'll be OK with either Dem in the office, but it would be nice to have a leader rather than a manager.

I'm from Toledo, and I even attended the Obama rally and everything, and I...just do not know. Maybe it's the extra edge from Bill Clinton's appearances, maybe it's the Muslim rumors, maybe it's the lack of experience issue.
I was at the Red Cross and I heard the doctors saying that Republicans were voting for Obama because McCain can beat him, so it was better to vote for Hillary.
I don't know, it might be something along those lines, but I'm still pretty angry. I guess it isn't over yet, though.

Cait, that's interesting because most of the "numbers" say that Clinton can't beat McCain but Obama can.

I can't imagine Clinton would, at this point in time, take the Vice Pres. spot. Will Obama? It's going to be a long road to the convention.

HMMMMM..I don't recall the American Pin one, tell me about it!!!

But.....
I have since checked with Snopes and learned some of the errors in my ways! What can I say, I live in the South....this is what our media shows me!

Dustin's Mom

My mom (also in the South) quoted me the same BS about Obama. I think there's a whole slew of such rumors, spread by right-wing-radio and other sources (I'm not pointing fingers at Hillary --- yet).

I've been depressed all day about the results.

My young adult daughter believed that "muslim" crap until she talked with her dear old dad. She'll be out of therapy soon.

I could put up with the shrieking laugh if there were some solid strength of character there that I could believe in (after all I've made it through 8 years of the most insincere "heh heh"-ing of W), but I cannot put up with a President who says whatever people want to hear all the time. Her positions on the key issues have changed so many times from state to state. If she is elected in a general election (which is virtually imposible), her re-election campaign will start the day she takes the oath and then the pandering will start all over again. Have you ever worked with someone who tells you in one meeting how supportive he/she is on an issue and then in front of management takes a completely different line when they see how the wind is blowing? That's Hillary Clinton. It's all about her ambition and not about taking the country back to a place of honour.

boldface truth right here people.

taking the country back to a place of honour?
WTF?
Yer either a limey or a damn canuck, but a furriner fer shur!
Spell like a stupid Yank.

Neither a limey or canuck. Legally resident and paying taxes in the US though and therefore entitled to an opinion.

Well I, for one, am thrilled to see this thing drag on. Lookit, both candidates can use some roughing up. They were too nice, too cordial in the beginning. The President is going to have to fight to win some important battles. Which ever candidate survives this is going to be stronger for it and that is good for the nation. Maybe Obama will lose his rose colored glasses; maybe Clinton tells the lobbyists to go fuck themselves.

And I have to note Nader's sentiment here, that this election is the Dem's to lose. McCain is not their top choice (he doesn't even seem to believe in himself) and the mood of the nation is so angry with the Republicans. Clinton and Obama need this fight. It's a good thing. Feel the love, y'all.

What's wrong if a Muslim (which B. Obama definitely is not) becomes the US president? Does it say anywhere in the US constitution that only a bona fide Christian is allowed to become a president? Was not the United States the first country to constitutionalize the separation between the State and the Church? Is the US a democracy or a hypocrisy?

P.S. May be the Americans should stop trying to bring democracy to Muslim countries, when their own brand of democracy is apparently not mature enough.

AMEN. This is one of the most hypocritical posts I've ever read.

I agree with Grace and Brianne. There are plenty of valid reasons to dislike Hillary that aren't based on sexism. How about the fact that she is in bed with all the exact same special interest groups that G W is. Any democrat who complains about the shady, backroom dealing that this administration does themselves and this country a disservice when they vote for Hill. I'm all for transparency in government. Thats what Obama promises and, to a much lesser degree, McCain does also. Look at where she gets her money. Why won't she disclose her tax returns? She is preparing them and will release them later? Just make a goddamn copy, it takes two seconds.

Either of our candidates is better than any of theirs, especially McCain who was beaten down by G.W. in 2000, and is now pandering to everyone and anyone he can to try to get more support. He's stumping out there, promising a 3rd Bush term. He supports making the tax cuts permanent (the ones that he opposed several times). He supports staying in Iraq. He supports our broken and backwards health care system. He's a ridiculous, shallow puppet of a man.

If the dems lose to the guy who is seriously campaigning as Bush III, then this country is in far worse shape than I thought. What's worse, if they DO lose it'll be because of stupid shit like that discussed here. A third of the country hates Hillary Clinton because for the past 20 years they've been told that they should. Some percentage that is far larger than I'd ever wish to acknowledge doesn't trust Obama because he's black, and they'll look for any reason to justify voting against him, whether it be to call him a Muslim, or to question his experience or patriotism. If such superficial bullshit decides who becomes our next president, the American people really need to stop fighting wars. As the earlier poster said, our brand of Democracy doesn't deserve to be spread any further until we can figure out how to stop being such a bunch of dumbass, racist, religion-of-convenience* fucktards.

*By "religion of convenience" I refer to the people who pick and choose the passages from the Bible that support their inherent prejudices and give them an excuse to feel better about being openly bigoted while ignoring the rest. You know, the same people who say gays should burn in Hell, and that we should blow up every Arab in the world (even if they only look like Arabs) all while cutting their taxes. In the meantime, ignore all that stuff about loving your neighbor, turning the other cheek, peace, love, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, healing the sick, etc. That's just hippy treehugger bullshit, right?
