Grandma Was the Lucky One

grandma1.gifThere is, perhaps, no song in the world I hate more than Elmo and Patsy’s “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer,” a song that sends me scurrying for a sleigh I can lie under every time I hear it. The damn song is nearly 30 years old now, and it’s novelty ran off about 3 days after it first aired.

And believe it or not, the man who owns the song’s copyright, Elmo Shropshire, is seriously wealthy. So much so, in fact, that he’s being sued for $2 million. Apparently, he licensed the song to the Fred Rappaport Company, who in turn created a animated show out of it in 2000. Rappaport contends that it owns the copyright in characters created in the animated show, rights it procured under a 2004 settlement with Elmo.

However, Elmo — who clearly has nothing else to do, having accomplished exactly one thing in his entire godforsaken life — has started sending out cease and desist letters to companies that made deals with the Fred Rappapport Company to market the characters. So, Rappapport is suing Elmo, claiming that he is screwing the company over, just as he’s screwed the rest of us over every Christmas since 1978.

Honestly, the only winner in this whole scenario is Grandma, who was fortunate enough to get drunk on egg nog and kilt by a sled, saving her from the indignity of being Elmo Shropshire’s granny.

Aw, I have a soft spot in my heart for the song perhaps because it was the center of my class's eighth-grade Christmas pagent skit (After that classes were banned from using anything other than religious music. No sense of humor in the administration, or maybe they shared your hatred of the song).

I'm surprised Quizlaw hasn't written about the man in Massachusetts who won 1 million on a scratch ticket. The beautiful part is that the man is on probation and was ordered to stay away from banks and wasn't allowed to play the lottery.

Well, the man won $1,000,000.00 and had his picture taken in the newspaper. Turns out his probation officer can read and when the PO saw his picture in the paper, the PO violated the mans probation.

Now a judge will have to decide the mans fate, as well as what will happen to the $1,000,000.00.

Lucky bastard!!
