Can I deduct medical and dental expenses?

If you itemize your deductions, rather than taking the standard deduction, you can include your medical and dental expenses in your itemized deductions. However, while most medical and dental expenses can be included, it is often difficult to get any actual deduction because you can only include those expenses that are in excess of 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (the one exception to this is if you are self-employed, in which case you can deduct all of your insurance premiums). If you are able to deduct some of your medical and dental expenses because they exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income, you do not have to worry about the 2% reduction, as it does not apply to medical and dental expenses.
