Can I deduct my moving expenses?
Generally, moving expenses related to a change of job are deductible. There are two tests you must meet, however - a distance test and a time test. If both are successfully met, then you can deduct the related travel costs as well as the expense of moving your household goods. In addition, if your family also moved, you can claim the expenses incurred by each of them, even if they did not move at the precise same time with you and/or travel with you.
This deduction is made to your gross income while calculating your adjusted gross income (the “AGI”), which means that you can claim a moving expense deduction even if you are taking the standard deduction rather than itemized deductions.
