Visual sexual aggression?

leering-devil.jpgOk, lookit. Even if you don’t believe in hell, you know there’s a special place in hell for kiddy piddlers. I’m right there with you. And yeah, I can’t say I’m a fan of nasty kiddy piddlers (or even just plain old creeps) leering at kids, even if it doesn’t go beyond that. And if I were a parent and saw some creepo hanging out outside my kid’s school or the park or something, getting all glinty-eyed and leery, he might find a size 10-and-a-half foot up his ass.

But a law allowing people to be thrown in jail for looking at kids? Come on, Maine, that’s fucking ridiculous.

And yes, the state’s House has already passed a bill that would make it a crime to leer at kids in public (apparently this is just “closing a loophole” on the visual sexual aggression law which, from the vague article, I gather already bans leering in private places).

Actually, it would appear that the visual sexual aggression law (as it stands prior to this bill), requires you to either be exposing yourself or seeing a child partially or totally naked. See here: http://janus.state.me.us/legis/statutes/17-A/title17-Asec256.html

The way I'm reading it, the change would just mean that you'd have to be looking at partially naked children or exposing yourself to them in order to be arrested.

This seems like enforcing it is going to be a logistical nightmare.

I'm a mandatory reporter, and I've worked with kids for my entire adult career, so I tend to keep an eye out for kids.

I'm the crazy lady that is watching your kids at dairy queen as you nonchalantly allow them to run in circles five feet from a major road. If I see something that looks unsafe, I'm going to keep an eye on it.

Part of that is, if I were to see a child "partially or totally naked" in public, I would probably be looking. Not because I'm a pervert, but because I would want to see what person was keeping their child naked in public.

Frankly, if you have a kid capable of walking, and they are wearing less than a swimsuit in public, I'm watching you to see if I need to hit the speed dial for CPS.

I'll admit, I'm a bit of an extremist as far as acceptable parenting techniques in public, but I would definitely be looking at a naked kid in public. Because allowing a child to be naked (I wouldn't count underwear) in public, is something that would raise red flags for me.

I guess what concerns me, is that I could potentially be charged for looking at a kid, when I have absolutely no scheming perverted thoughts toward the kids. I'm a busybody, but I'm not a pedophile, and determining intent behind looking at people seems like it will be an absolute horror.

Oh my freaking god can we please not ban little kids from running around naked at the beach??? Can America please stop being the naked nazis???

Boy, Ashleigh. It sounds like you're a little more than a busybody. Does the name Gladys Kravitz ring a bell?

Get a grip and step away from the speed dial.
