Can a hospital turn me away if I can’t pay?

It depends on the situation and the hospital. In all cases, regardless of ability to pay, a hospital cannot turn you away for medical care in an emergency situation. However, private hospitals are not required to provide non-emergency medical care to patients that cannot pay; however, even private hospitals cannot turn away patients once they have been admitted, nor can treatment be discontinued without adequate notice.
