What is a taxpayer identification number?

A taxpayer identification number (also referred to as a “TIN”) is a number used by the IRS to refer to taxpayers. For individuals, the taxpayer identification number is generally that person’s Social Security Number. If someone does not have a Social Security Number, they can apply for an IRS individual taxpayer identification number. For business entities, the taxpayer identification number is generally the entity’s employer identification number (the “EIN”).
