Can I deduct my expenses for looking for a new job?

You can generally deduct your expenses for searching for a new job, even if you did not end up finding a job, as long as that new job is in the same line of work as your current job. This includes travel expenses for interviews, as well as search fees and research materials. However, if you have been unemployed for a significant amount of time, of if you are looking for your first job, you cannot take this deduction.

This deduction is included in the miscellaneous deductions and is therefore subject to the 2% floor (collectively with all other miscellaneous deductions).
