Can I claim the Hope credit or the lifetime learning credit for education expenses paid for by my child or dependent?

Generally, the Hope credit or lifetime learning credit are claimed when you directly paid for qualifying educational expenses. However, where your child or dependent paid for these expenses, you may still claim either credit if you are claiming an exemption for that child or dependent. So if your son or daughter pays for their own tuition and you claim your child as an exemption on your tax return, you can still claim the Hope credit or lifetime learning credit (assuming you are otherwise entitled to the credit) for their tuition payments.
