What factors are considered when awarding alimony?

Though courts award alimony less and less frequently, when a court does award it, it takes several factors into consideration in determining amount and duration. The factors include 1) the length of the marriage, 2) the economic circumstances of each spouse, 3) the standard of living established during the marriage, 4) the age and health of each spouse, 4) the needs of each spouse, 5) each spouse’s contribution to the marriage, and 6) the time necessary for the awarded spouse to become self-sufficient. Marital fault is rarely considered in the calculation of alimony.
