How do I apply for a federal trademark registration?

The process to apply for a federal trademark registration is rather straightforward. You must fill out a trademark application and file that application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (commonly referred to as the PTO). You can do this with paper forms, or online through the PTO’s Trademark Electronic Application System (TEAS).

Once the application has been filed, the Patent and Trademark Office will either reject the application or grant it. If rejected, you will have an opportunity to convince the PTO to reconsider. If granted, your mark will be publicly published to give others an opportunity to object and oppose registration, and following that, your mark will be registered on either the Principal Register or the Supplemental Register.
