Can I protect a scent or fragrance as a trademark?

Smells can be protected as trademarks if they meet the requirements of protectability, principally the requirement that trademarks be distinctive. As one might guess, there are relatively few scents or fragrances which are recognized as being entitled to protection as a trademark.
