What is a compilation?

Compilations are one of the explicit categories of information enunciated in the Uniform Trade Secret Act as being entitled to trade secret protection. Generally, compilations include (as one might expect) compiled information. The most typical type of compilations claimed as trade secret by companies are customer lists and supplier lists. While the individual customers and suppliers are generally known and identifiable via a phone book or other types of public listings, companies are entitled to trade secret protection of their lists because they have culled the public information down to something that provides value to them.
