How is a trade secret different from a trademark?

Trademarks and trade secrets are fundamentally different things. The underlying purpose of trademark law is to protect information (words, slogans, logos, etc.) which has gained awareness and distinction in the mind of the consuming public. Trade secret law, meanwhile, protects information which is specifically kept secret and out of the marketplace.
