What is inequitable conduct?

During the patent application process, a patent applicant may take certain improper actions which can result in the application being denied (or if these actions are discovered later, after a patent has issued, can result in the patent being declared invalid). Such inequitable conduct includes making intentional misstatements of a fact in the patent application or to the PTO, or failing disclose information material to the patent application.
