What can I patent?

In a 1980 decision, the Supreme Court famously noted that you can patent “anything under the sun made by man.” Of course, there are some limitations to what is patentable subject matter, but the point being made by the Supreme Court is that anything invented or created can ostensibly be patented.

The above quote comes from Diamond v. Chakrabarty, 447 U.S. 303, 309 (1980).
