What does OSHA say about restrooms & proper hygiene in the workplace?
OSHA (the Occupational Safety and Health Act) contains regulations which require employers to provide at least one restroom for each 20 employees of the same gender. The provided restroom should include adequate hot/cold water, hand towels, and soap. Employers who require employees to shower before leaving work must also provide a shower on premises, with one shower for every 10 employees of the same sex, as well as a locker to store clothes.
Employees who handle food are required to wash their hands after using the restroom and wear gloves while handling food. Food areas must also be free of exposure to toxic substances.
