Can I deduct dues and subscription fees?

If you are a “professional,” such a lawyer, teacher, physician or accountant, you can generally deduct professional dues. Similarly, if you are a securities dealer you can deduct dues paid to the stock exchange, if you belong to a trade association you can deduct the association’s due and if you are a union member you can deduct your unions fees. You can also generally deduct subscription fees for any job-related subscriptions you have to trade magazines or professional journals. All of these deductions are included in the miscellaneous deductions and are therefore subject to the 2% floor (collectively with all other miscellaneous deductions).
