What is the status quo exception?

Under the “status quo” exception to the warrant requirement, where officers have probable cause to enter the premises and to arrest a suspect, they can maintain the “status quo” of the premises to prevent the destruction of evidence for a reasonable period of time while other officers are in the process of obtaining a warrant. A reasonable period of time differs in each situation, but courts have held that it may extend up to 19 hours.
