What is the hot pursuit doctrine?

One of the exceptions to the warrant requirement, popularized perhaps by Roscoe P. Coltraine in “The Dukes of Hazzard,” is the hot pursuit doctrine, which allows a police officer to pursue a felon; in other words, hot pursuit involves a chase and pursuit of, and flight by, the suspect; i.e. an immediate continuous pursuit of and some effort by the suspect to escape.
