Does an officer have to read me my rights before asking questions?

Not at all. A police officer only has an obligation to read you your Miranda rights if you are under arrest, or otherwise held in police custody. If the officer wants to simply ask you questions without detaining you, then Miranda rights aren’t necessary and what you say can be used against you.
