Do I have the right to choose counsel?

The law surrounding the right to counsel of your own choosing is actually up for question at the Supreme Court. However, for the time being, if you are indigent (can’t afford a lawyer), the right to choose your lawyer is solely at the discretion of the trial court. Only if a defendant can establish good cause will a trial court substitute counsel. The 6th Amendment only guarantees the right to competent counsel, not to a good attorney-client relationship.
