What qualifies as a literary work?

A literary work is any material object which embodies a work that has been expressed in words, numbers or other verbal/numerical symbols. This includes books (both fiction and protectable non-fiction), magazines, newspapers, plays, recipes, computer software, unpublished books saved on a computer disk, etc. The physical form of the material object does not matter - rather, the focus is on the nature of the work itself.
