What is the Architectural Works Copyright Protection Act?

In 1990, Congress enacted the Architectural Works Copyright Protection Act to allow for the explicit protection of building design and architectural work. Prior to 1990, maps and blueprints could have been protected as a pictorial, graphic or sculptural works, but the physical building itself could not be protected. Now, the overall form and composition of the building itself can be protected by copyright.
