What is sampling?

Sampling occurs primarily in the music industry, where portions of a sound recording are incorporated into a new recording. When a song is sampled without the permission of the copyright owners of the original sound recording and musical work, that sampling is likely to be an infringement of the sound recording, and may also be infringement of the underlying musical work. So you should obtain the necessary licenses prior to sampling any recording in your own work.
