What is a federal copyright registration?

The Copyright Act provides for the registration of protectable works with the Copyright Office of the Library of Congress. Once registered, the work’s author receives a Certificate of Registration. While registration is not necessary for a work to be protected, there are certain additional benefits that come with having a copyright registration.
