What is an heir apparent?

A living person has no heirs, because the definition of an heir is someone who is entitled to inherit property from someone who has died. Thus, the term “heir apparent” is used to refer to people who are likely to be heirs when someone else dies. For example, my son would be one of my heirs apparent, as he would be likely to inherit some of my property when I die.
