What is a general gift?

When a testamentary gift is not specific enough to define exactly what property is being given away, the gift is a general gift. At first glance, a general gift might seem specific. For example, if my will says that I am giving you “ten thousand dollars” or “a computer,” even though these seem specific, these are both general gifts. This is because I did not specify what ten thousand dollars (such as saying “my ten thousand dollars” or “the ten thousand dollars in my savings account”) or which computer (such as saying “my computer” rather than “a computer”).
